While watching these truly elite players, it was actually good to see that they are human. They make mistakes. It should serve to remind us all they we are human too, and we can't play perfectly. It's possible to win games of skill despite our imperfection. But we're not doing ourselves any favors either. It certainly diminishes our chances.

Specifically, I'm referring to "steaming". That's when a player loses a hand he feels he should have won, and tries to "make up for it" on the next hand. Sometimes it's difficult to separate our emotion from our decisions. But we need to be rational. The outcome of the next random event has absolutely nothing to do with the previous outcome. If I flip heads on a coin 25 times in a row, our intuition might tell us to bet on tails. That's fine if you want to do that. But it's important to understand that the outcome has nothing to do with previous outcomes. It will not be tails because it was heads 25 times in a row. If a player were to have bet on heads each of those 25 times, he would probably be upset. If he were to increase his bet far beyond his normal betting increment, he would be steaming. It's irrational and dangerous. The same applies to "patterns". If it has gone Head-Tails-Head-Tails over and over, it a coincidence. It does not mean the next outcome will be heads as a result.

The house already has enough of an advantage. So make sure to play smart, and give yourself as many chances to win as possible. Don't be your own worst enemy. It may be difficult to shake off a tough loss, but you must remain focused on the next hand, roll, pull, game, or whatever it is you're playing.
